LEGO Lawn Mower
One of my friends saw the following Instagram post and asked me if I had any ideas on the pieces required to build this:
He wanted to build this for his dad for Christmas, and a list of parts would help to see how many parts he already had, versus ordering parts from LEGO or from Brikilink. He was also stuck on some of the techniques used.
One thing to note about the different places to order from (Considering how expensive it is to ship things across Canada):
- Usually the LEGO Pick a Brick service is somewhat fast (ships from the USA) and relatively inexpensive, but the selection is quite limited.
- Bricklink (now owned by LEGO) is a used/new LEGO marketplace which offers a virtually unlimited selection, but it's more complicated to order, and more expensive to ship if you have to deal with multiple sellers. Plus it can take some time to receive your pieces. There may be order minimums and other restrictions getting in the way.
- The LEGO Bricks & Pieces customer service (under Support > Replacement parts) has a large selection and inexpensive shipping. However, because it ships from Europe with no tracking, you could sometimes wait months to get your pieces if there are shipping delays due to a pandemic, zombie attack, alien invasion, etc.
My friend approached me at the end of November, and we were in a pandemic, so there could be shipping delays due to Customs, so shopping on Bricklink and limiting his vendors to Canadian sellers would help him make his Christmas deadline.
This little lawn mower looked easy enough, so I decided to reverse-engineer how LEGO did it and created a mock-up using the closest parts I had in my inventory:

I then refined the design by using pieces I thought were better, and also using more identical pieces to reduce the number of unique pieces to order (Click on each picture for a full-size version):
